#The Ruskeala Mining Park

Hi everyone :) I'm back!
Today I am gonna tell you about the Ruskeala Mining Park which is located in the Sortavala district of Karelia Republic(the federal subject of Russia). The Mining park is interesting for its marble mines. In the past Ruskeala marble was taken for the construction of St. Isaac's and Kazan cathedrals, Marble Palace and many many others in Saint-Petersburg.

Here is our route :)
We were driving longer than it is shown on the map. The thing is that there was kind of a snowstorm that is why it was hard to drive. (you can check the video)

The heart of the Mining park is the Marble Canyon (artificial quarry)

There is a hiking trail around the canyon and as you see it can lead tourists to these cute chums/tents :)

In summer it is possible to take a boat and enjoy the beauty of the Canyon from the water

There are tunnels in the walls of the quarry which connect The Grand Marble Quarry to the small ones (they are also situated on the territory of the Mining Park). Most of the tunnels are flooded and closed for tourists. But there are "dry" tunnels and it is possible to visit them.

(!) Tunnels under the water (!)
If you are a skilled diver do not forget to take equipment with you cause there is an opportunity to plunge in the depth of the quarry.
__________________________

We rode the Zipline and it was minus 17  degrees centigrade :)
It was super fun and not cold at all :)

The Ruskeala failure
It is collapsed vault of winze, which was formed after strong explosion in the quarry.
Ice never melts in the distant parts of the winze so when you get there you will see huge icicles on walls.
However it is not easy to descend into the Ruskeala failure. In summer there is special "system" cause small lake is formed in the place of the failure. As you understand it is easier to descend in winter but you should just wait when water is frozen completely.
This time ice was not that strong that is why we did not get there.
Well, you know guys it is the reason to come back there again :)

Ruskeala waterfalls (they are located before the Ruskeala Mining Park)
It is the place where the famous Russian movie "The Dawns Here Are Quiet" (1972) was  shot

You can taste willow-herb tea for free near the waterfalls. But donation is welcomed ;)
